Joy Is the Movement
Date
Decemeber 2025
Project type
Illustration
This piece is centered in joy as dance is intentional, radical, and embodied through movement. This mixed-media illustration explores movement as both a physical and cultural language. Centered on a Black ballerina mid-motion, the piece collapses traditional boundaries between classical dance and contemporary Black musical forms such as hip-hop and jazz. The swirling, vibrant background mirrors rhythm and sound, while handwritten affirmations surrounding the figure emphasize self-expression, memory, and resilience. By placing a Black body at the heart of a traditionally exclusionary art form, the work reclaims space and challenges dominant narratives about who belongs in classical performance. Dance here becomes an act of resistance, joy, and self-definition.
